Meet Pando, the largest living tree
Weighing in at over 13.2 million pounds and spanning 106-acres, Pando is known as the world’s largest living organism. Made up of more than 40,000 genetically identical stems, all connected by a single root system, Pando is the largest aspen colony on record, nestled in the picturesque Fishlake National Forest in Utah.
Thought to be one of the oldest life forms on Earth, it is said to have endured for thousands of years.
Despite its roots covering over 106 acres, this large-scale wonder is under threat. As the climate crisis worsens and the impact of wildlife living within the reserve becomes more apparent, protecting Pando has never been more important.
At LEX Reception, we believe every minute counts, and every tree matters. That’s why we’ve partnered with Friends of Pando, a charity dedicated to mapping, monitoring, protecting and restoring trees like Pando.
Who are Friends of Pando?
Friends of Pando works to educate the public, monitor and protect this colossal colony of interconnected trees. They do this through:
- conducting scientific studies to monitor Pando’s health
- pioneering habitat restoration through protective fencing and regeneration efforts
- raising public awareness through education and advocacy
Pando is so large that it was hidden in plain sight for over 1,500 years. This means there’s much more to learn about this magnificent tree, including the ever-mounting challenges to protect it for future generations.
Why Pando matters
Pando is more than just a tree – it’s a living network that supports diverse wildlife and plays a crucial role in carbon storage. However, without sustainable conservation efforts, its decline could have far-reaching consequences for biodiversity and the environment.
Fortunately, conservation efforts are making a difference. By protecting vulnerable sections, planting new shoots, and reducing external threats, researchers have seen signs of recovery. With the right support, Pando can continue to grow for generations to come.

Every minute counts
The average tree absorbs between 10 and 40 kg of carbon over its lifetime.¹ That’s why, for every customer and team member, we plant a tree each month.
By working with Friends of Pando, we’re continuing our commitment to select one tree-planting partner to support—learning from them, amplifying their story, and effecting change that lasts millennia beyond our lifetime.
Giving back to the planet
By protecting Pando, we’re investing in the next millenia for our planet. Join us in making a difference, and stay tuned for more updates throughout the year.
